How to:

Transfer from GIA to ISA

If you’re looking to utilise your client’s ISA allowance, our simple online process allows you to transfer funds from a GIA.

Key things to remember

Joint GIAs:

  • If you’re transferring from a Joint GIA, only available cash can be used. There isn’t the option to place sales within the journey.

Online processes:

  • The online process is secure and paper‑free.

When fees are due:

  • If fees are due, make sure enough cash remains in the GIA to cover them.

Specific assets cap:

  • Selling specific assets is capped at 90% of each holding due to price movement.

Model portfolios:

  • Using a model portfolio will apply it to the whole ISA wrapper, this then becomes the default.
  • If the ISA wrapper is linked to a model portfolio and cash or assets are selected within this journey, these will be swept up when the model next rebalances.

Adviser charges:

  • Adviser charges taken from the ISA use up ISA allowance and can’t be re‑added.

GIA and ISA under different investor IDs

  • If the GIA and ISA are under different investor IDs, but are not linked,  you will not have the transfer from GIA option and will need to do this process manually.
  • This is done by selling down the GIA, submitting a single top up on ISA and sending us a secure email asking us to move the funds.

Adviser Zone journey

From the Adviser Zone dashboard:

Select ‘Go to Investor’

↓

OR use the search bar to search via the client’s name

Select from: Individual, Junior Individual, Joint, Company or Trust (Company and Trust name must exactly match their legal documents).

↓

Go into the ISA wrapper

↓

Select ‘Top-up’ from the buttons on the top right

  • If you’re unable to complete the transfer online, or if you’re transferring to another wrapper (such as a SIPP), the funds must be sold to cash first and then instructions need to be sent via Secure Email.

↓

The submission process

1. Choose a wrapper nickname

The wrapper nickname is optional but useful for telling multiples of the same product wrappers apart.

2. Choose investment type; ‘Transfer from GIA’

  • Select the GIA you want to transfer from, it will show available cash to transfer.

Note: If there’s not enough available cash, you’ll need to sell down to fund the difference or reduce the transfer amount. The options to sell down will appear automatically. You can choose to use some, all, or none of this available cash and also place a proportionate disinvestment or sale of specific assets.

Note: If you have recently completed a switch to cash in the GIA and the sale of assets hasn’t completed, this amount won’t show in the available cash.

  • We’ll then ask if you’d like to sell assets.
  • Enter the Investment amount or select ‘Sell All Assets’.
  • Confirm the initial charge amount or percentage.
  • If sales are required you’ll be asked how much of the available cash you wish to use, and you’ll also need to confirm proportionate disinvestment or specify assets.

Note: If you selected ‘Specify Assets’ you will need to select what funds to sell from in £.

Note: If you selected ‘Sell All Assets’ or proportionate disinvestment, then the screen is pre-populated with sell figures.

3. Sell (if requested)

4. Select regular withdrawals (optional)

5. Ongoing charges

Choose from:

  • None
  • Amount
  • Percentage

6. Default investment strategy (only available if you have this)

  • Choose: Yes or No
  • If you have a default investment strategy already, this is shown for reference but it cannot be amended within this journey.

7. Add investment (if a default strategy hasn’t been chosen)

Choose from:

  • Cash
  • Model
  • Asset

8. View your documents

Document types:

  • Pre-sales Imago illustration
  • Switch Application Summary
  • Client Report
  • ISA Application Summary

These documents are for your records. You don’t need to send them to us.

What happens next

Once submitted:

  • The GIA assets are sold as instructed
  • Cash is transferred and invested into the ISA
  • Confirmation documents are available immediately
  • The transfer goes ahead without further action, unless we need any clarification from you
