We value building and maintaining a close knit relationship with all the firms we work with here at Wealthtime.

We’ve caught up with Colin, who is our Business Development Manager for the North and, West and Wales to hear about his career journey, what motivates him, and his view on maintaining good relationships with our firms.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role

I’m Colin Stone, a Business Development Manager. It’s very varied, so it’s not easy to describe a “typical” day. A key part of my role is to build and maintain relationships with IFA firms by finding out how we can best support their business and clients. I am often on the phone talking about new business cases and how this is best achieved on Wealthtime.

As a firm’s Wealthtime representative, I help with communication and ensure their interests are taken care of. I also work on presenting or organising upcoming meetings, liaising with my regional sales manager colleagues, Matthew Hall (North) and Sharon McClelland (West & Wales).

How did you get to where you are now?

My first ever job was at NatWest Bullion Centre (Cribbs Causeway) in Bristol, my first entrance into finance before going out into the branch network.

I then moved from NatWest into HSBC. I worked as a team leader in a cheque processing centre for around 20 years running various departments. I was made redundant there as people weren’t writing cheques anymore and moved to the Elevate platform where I worked in both operations and as a training consultant.

I came to Wealthtime 8 and a half years ago and have been here ever since. I’ve always found Wealthtime to be really supportive. They’ve supported me in completing my R0 exams to become qualified with my finance diploma.

What kind of work environment brings out the best in you?

I like getting out to meet advisers face-to-face and will always welcome challenge. If ever it feels like I’ve got my back against the wall, I like to think that brings out the best in me. Also working as part of a supportive sales team in the background helps a lot.

Have you got any career advice you would offer?

I would say if you’re serious about a career in platforms, the best advice I can give is that it’s worth building your own brand on LinkedIn, especially if you want to get involved in sales. I think that really helps you stay in the loop, along with subscribing to industry magazines.

Overall, I would say if you’ve got an interest in pursuing a certain career, you have to be serious about it and put stepping stones in place.

What was your best money decision?

My best money decision I think was that, as I’m getting a little bit older now, I decided to up my contributions into my pension. That for me is a good decision made because putting that off longer means that you have to put more in.

Do you regularly support any charities?

I support through my wages and give to the Wealthtime Foundation. Also, along with some colleagues, I participated in the Genesis foodbank and furniture project volunteering last year. This is certainly something I’d encourage people to get involved in.

What do you like to do when you’re when not working?

I enjoy football and support Bristol City. We did well last year getting into the playoffs. I’m hoping we have a similar type of season again. I go to matches often with my daughter and she really enjoys it too! I go to church quite regularly on a Sunday as well and get involved with that. So those two things take up a fair bit of my time.

I’ve always found Wealthtime to be really supportive. They’ve supported me in completing my R0 exams to become qualified with my finance diploma.
